Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade is usually the first thing that comes to mind when the layman hears of communion cups. There is no denying the fact that pop culture has portrayed some of the most significant religious items in a very unorthodox manner, however, the great thing is that because of this they have allowed ordinary people to get acquainted with these same religious items. In the movie, Indiana Jones was looking for Jesus' cup. For believers, this is called the Holy Grail, the ultimate communion cup which was used by Christ himself. In some literary works, the Holy Grail is not taken to just mean the cup that Christ had used, but also the dish as well as plate that Christ had used as well in the Last Supper that he had with his disciples. Throughout centuries, this Holy Grail came to be represented as a communion cup that we are now familiar with. Of course, even if people are familiar with it, the usage of communion cups varies all over the world. Most cups are also created using different materials depending on the country and people that are using it. As an example, the Christian peasants that are from Mexico create cups using baked clay while Christian Palestinians create cups with the use of olive wood. No matter what communion cups are made for, they serve one major purpose, and that is to symbolize the faith that people have in Christ. Some small churches still go for glass cups, but it can take up time since they require washing and cleaning up. Thus, plastic communion cups are deemed more favorable by most big churches. One important purpose for communion cups is to symbolize the blood of Christ and faith of the people, hence, they are an important part of the Christian belief, no matter what they are made of. History is an integral part of communion cups, whether it be the silver cups that the Egyptians and Sumerians used or the plastic cups that most churches use now. They are an important piece of element for the people that use them. It supposedly contained the sponge that was used by Christ at Calvary. This was apart from the tradition and belief surrounding the cup from the last supper. Even though the cup in the Last Supper was hardly mentioned, people still gave it plenty of significance and uphold it as a sacred item. Another cup was also revered by Pilgrims in Jerusalem which was supposedly stored in the Holy Sepulcher. This is thought to be the cup that was used by Christ in his crucifixion in Calvary and still supposedly contains that sponge that he used. This is of course, different from the cup and tradition surrounding the cup from the Last Supper. Church Bulletins are also available here. Chris Church supplies
